Security at the Heart of TMO Highways

At TMO Highways, we know that strong IT security isn’t just about technology – it’s about people. That’s why we invest in regular training to ensure our staff are confident in spotting and stopping threats before they cause harm.

A key part of this training is our phishing simulation programme. Phishing emails are fake messages designed to trick people into clicking harmful links or sharing sensitive information. By running regular simulations where staff are sent these fake emails, we give staff the chance to practice identifying suspicious emails in a safe environment. We are proud to report that our team recently achieved a 97% success rate in these simulations over the last quarter. This means that 97% of the test emails were spotted and immediately deleted. The remaining 3% weren’t opened either – instead, they were sensibly reported to the IT department for review. In other words, 100% of the phishing emails were recognised for what they were. That’s proof that our monthly IT security training is working and that our people are staying alert.

Of course, training is only one piece of the puzzle. To back this up, TMO also holds the Cyber Essentials certification – a UK government-backed standard that shows we take security seriously across all areas of the business. Together, these measures mean we’re not just meeting industry requirements, but actively building a culture of security and awareness.

For us, IT security isn’t a one-off project – it’s an ongoing commitment. And as the digital landscape evolves, we’ll continue to make sure that TMO Highways stays ahead of the risks.

The bulk of our office staff undergoing the training were in our Eye Offices in Suffolk but we also have offices in Essex, Cambridge and The Midlands that are all happily reporting just as impressive numbers!
