TMO proud to be supporting Karen’s Hedgehogspital
At TMO Highways, being a responsible business means looking beyond the work we do on the road network and considering how we can make a positive contribution to the communities and environments around us.
That’s why we were delighted to support Karen’s Hedgehogspital in Brandon through the donation of six bespoke hedgehog houses to help rehabilitated hedgehogs transition safely back into the wild.
Turning Fundraising into Action
Throughout the year, our office teams across Norfolk, Suffolk and London are busy providing TM plans, organising new Traffic Management installs going on the road and assisting customers with Event Management. But that’s not all! They also participate in a weekly non-uniform day, donating £1 each Friday to support worthwhile causes and community initiatives.
Thanks to the generosity of our staff, we were able to raise £300 which was used to purchase six handcrafted hedgehog houses.
The houses were produced by Nigel at Little Field Country Crafts, who delivered exceptional craftsmanship and an incredibly quick turnaround to ensure the project could be completed within just two weeks.
Supporting a Valuable Local Service
After following Karen’s Hedgehogspital on social media, we became aware of the increasing pressures being faced by the rescue centre and the growing number of hedgehogs requiring care and rehabilitation.
Posts highlighting that the centre was “full to the brim” demonstrated the critical need for support.
Upon contacting Karen, she explained that additional hedgehog houses would make a significant difference in helping rehabilitated hedgehogs safely return to their natural environment.
With that in mind, the decision to support the project was an easy one.
We recently delivered the six houses to Karen and her dedicated team of volunteers, who work tirelessly to care for injured, orphaned and vulnerable hedgehogs before preparing them for release.
Karen commented:
“I would like to thank the team at TMO Highways for their kind support in donating these six wonderful hedgehog houses following their weekly fundraising efforts from their Friday Non-Uniform Day.”
Why Hedgehogs Need Our Help
Once a familiar sight throughout the UK, hedgehog populations have faced significant challenges in recent years due to habitat loss, changing land use and increasing environmental pressures.
Wildlife rescue centres such as Karen’s Hedgehogspital play an important role in caring for sick, injured and underweight hedgehogs, helping to give them the best possible chance of surviving and thriving once returned to the wild.
The donated houses will provide safe shelter for rehabilitated hedgehogs as they continue their transition back into their natural habitats.
Supporting Our Responsible Business Strategy
As a business, we recognise that sustainability is about far more than carbon reduction.
Our Responsible Business Strategy focuses on creating positive social and environmental outcomes wherever possible, whether that’s improving safety, supporting local communities, reducing our environmental impact or contributing to biodiversity initiatives.
This project may be relatively small in scale, but it highlights something that is incredibly important to us — people working together to make a positive difference.
The £300 donated wasn’t generated through corporate budgets. It came directly from colleagues who chose to support a worthy cause through a simple weekly fundraising initiative.
That collective effort has now delivered something tangible that will continue to benefit local wildlife for years to come.
Thank You
A huge thank you goes to:
🦔 Karen and her fantastic team of volunteers at Karen’s Hedgehogspital
🦔 Nigel from Little Field Country Crafts for producing such high-quality hedgehog houses at short notice
🦔 Every member of the TMO Highways team who contributes to our Friday Non-Uniform Day fundraising effort
We look forward to seeing the houses put to good use and hearing about the hedgehogs that benefit from them in the months ahead.
Sometimes, making a difference doesn’t require grand gestures. Sometimes it starts with six little houses and a team that cares.
